A 37-year-old convicted child molester who allegedly confessed to the murder of his 11-year-old niece in Ilia in the western Peloponnese on Sunday reportedly admitted attempting to rape the young girl before killing her on Tuesday.

According to sources, the suspect admitted to stabbing the 11-year-old with a screwdriver when she resisted his attempts and said she would report it to her parents.

The 37-year-old is a cousin of the girl’s mother and her best man and husband. He was driving the girl from her home in the coastal village of Myrtia to her grandfather’s house when he tried to rape her.

The girl’s body was later discovered in a field after her parents reported her missing and an Amber Alert was issued.

The suspect, who will face prosecutors on Tuesday, reportedly admitted to throwing the screwdriver he used to stab her into a swampy area.

A coroner will determine whether the girl was raped before her murder.

The 37-year-old was released from prison while appealing against a conviction for raping a minor in 2017 on the Ionian island of Zakynthos. The girl in that case was said to be a cousin of the 11-year-old’s father.

State broadcaster ERT said he had been sentenced to nine years in prison but was released on the condition that he report to the local police station twice a month.
