Angry scenes during Israeli parliament vote on conscription law

JERUSALEM (Reuters) – Israel’s parliament passed a controversial bill on Monday to conscript ultra-Orthodox students into the army. Angry scenes erupted in the Knesset as families of some Gaza hostages demanded more action to bring them home. A day after former centrist general Benny Gantz quit the government amid a dispute over the strategic aims of the Gaza war, the vote and confrontations underscored the explosive mix of forces facing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is now increasingly dependent on his allies on the far right. The conscription law, which still has to pass further readings and committee hearings after the late evening vote, would allow a gradual entry into the army of some ultra-Orthodox Jews who have traditionally resisted serving in the armed forces.
