Wayanad landslides: Death toll crosses 300; rescue operation underway | IN POINTS | Nation

Landslides in Wayanad: Two days after the massive landslides in Wayanad district of Kerala, the death toll has risen to 308.

According to Kerala Health Minister Veena George, “the death toll currently stands at 308.”

Chairing a high-level meeting attended by leaders of all political parties, state ministers and other officials, the Prime Minister said that rescuing the missing persons was now the top priority and rehabilitation would be started as soon as possible.

  • The Kerala Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for Wayanad district until Saturday; the district has already been affected by landslides that have killed over 300 people.
  • Neetha K Gopal, director of IMD Kerala, said that there would be rain but there could be some clearing spells in between, which would also provide relief to rescue workers.
  • Orange alert has been issued in four northern districts of Kerala, including Wayanad.
  • A yellow warning was issued in the south up to Pathanamthitta
  • After the landslides, the Indian Army has also completed the construction of Cl 24 Bailey Bridge in record time. The bridge connecting Chooralmala to Mundakkai across the Iruvanipzha river has been opened for traffic and handed over to the civil administration.
  • Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi and Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra visited the landslide site in Chooralmala, Wayanad on Thursday. Addressing the media, Rahul Gandhi said that it was a terrible tragedy for Wayanad and a lot of work needs to be done here. “It is a terrible tragedy for Wayanad, for Kerala and the nation. We have come here to see the situation. It is painful to see how many people have lost family members and their homes. We will try to help and ensure that the survivors get what they deserve. Many of them want to be relocated. A lot of work needs to be done here. I want to thank everyone, including doctors, nurses, administrative staff and volunteers,” he said.

  • After the landslide in Wayanad, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has received huge support for his appeal for donations to the Chief Minister’s Disaster Relief Fund (CMDRF). The fundraising campaigns are seeing donations pouring in from various sectors to help the affected areas.
  • According to the Kerala Revenue Department, two massive landslides struck Mundakkai and Churalmala in Wayanad in the early hours of July 30, causing tremendous destruction, loss of life and injury to hundreds of people.
